Congratulations to Fiamma Nirenstein on receiving the Hemmingway Prize 2008  (Lignano Sabbiadoro, June 7, 2008) for her journalistic activity "in presenting the problems of the Israeli-Palestinian tragedy".

Judith Sudilovsky won first place this year in the Catholic Press Association's Best Investigative Newswriting category for a series on Iraqi refugees in Jordan. Here is what the judges said: "Hats off to Judith Sudilovsky for her excellent series of stories about Iraqi refugees in Amman, Jordan. Told through the experience of the refugees, the series shed light on an underreported repercussion of the war in Iraq. It clearly took some digging to find these people.  Sudilovsky's stories also captured the efforts of the Catholic Church to help. Very clean writing."

To Matt Rees on the publication  on February 1st of the second book in his series of Omar Yussef  detective novels called: A Grave in Gaza (US) / The Saladin Murders (UK). Omar goes to Gaza to conduct a schools inspection, but finds himself caught in a missile-smuggling ring, infighting between Palestinian security chiefs, and kidnapping. The first book in the series, The Collaborator of Bethlehem (titled The Bethlehem Murders in the UK), was named one of the 10 Best Mysteries of 2007 by Booklist, whose reviewer says that the follow-up is "every bit as good as its predecessor." The Bookseller describes his new novel as "a cracking, atmospheric read." Mystery writers also praise the series. Colin Dexter, author of the terrific Inspector Morse novels, says "Yussef is a splendid creation" and describes the books as "beautifully written, full of humanity."
To give you some of the atmosphere of the novels, Matt made a video with his friend, photojournalist David Blumenfeld, on Youtube. The first writer to bring detective fiction to Palestine -- possibly the first to bring film noir to the Holy Land:
